- Mrs. Betsy Carlson (nee Swenson) was born in Sylvisborg, Sweden, July 10, 1861. She grew to womanhood there, was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church of Sweden.
She was married to Julius Carlson December 26, 1883. The family came to America in 1893.. Mr. Carlson, being a sailor by trade, took employment on the east coast, but the family came to Nebraska and settled on a farm near Shickley, together with Mrs. Carlson's brother, Pete Swenson, who passed away September 17, 1943. The husband, Mr. Carlson, passed away March 30, 1905, shortly after retiring from his work as a sailor and coming to Nebraska to be with his family. Mrs. Carlson, with her children and brother, continued to live on the farm, where the children grew up.
In 1920 Mrs. Carlson, together with her brother, moved to Shickley, where she made her home till the time of her death. After a short illness of pneumonia, she passed away January 6, 1944, at the home of her son, Sigfried Carlson, having reached the age of 82 years, 5 months, 26 days.
Mrs. Carlson became a member of the Stockholm Lutheran Church July 2, 1899, and remained a faithful member.
She leaves to mourn her departure four children, Julia, wife of Rev. F. E. Anderson of Woodhull, Ill., Sigfried of Shickley, Mrs. Anna Erickson of Altadena, Cal., and Harry of Geneva; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, two brothers, John of Clay Center, Kas., August of Ong, Neb., a large number of other relatives and a host of friends. Five brothers preceded her in death.
Mrs. Carlson was a sincere Christian, a kind and loving mother, having the welfare of her children very much at heart. She was a good neighbor and friend. Her cheery disposition and the hearty welcome to her home will be missed by many of this community, where she lived and labored for so many years. She has gone to her reward. May she rest in peace.
Services for Mrs. Carlson were held at her home in Shickley, Sunday, January 9, at 2:30 p.m. and at the Stockholm Lutheran Church at 3 p.m. Interment was at the Stockholm cemetery. The pastor, Hilmer Larson, officiated.
