- Nils Erickson came to Michigan with his parents, brothers and sisters in 1889. They settled on a farm about a mile and one-half southeast of Alto.
He and Emma Christena Magnuson were married in his parent's home, by H.P. Quist, pastor of an Evangelical Lutheran Church. Witnesses were: James Johnson of McCords, MI, and Andrew Anderson of Bowne Twp.
Nils and Emma moved in with his parents until they could save enough money for a farm of their own. Together they had 4 sons born there: Axel Elmer, Elof Mattias, Ernest Victor and Albert Leander.
In 1902 Nils and Emma bought a farm just south of his parent's and there two more children were born: Ida Mathilda and John Adrian. The children were baptized in various homes, when a pastor from the Bethlehem [Swedish] Lutheran church of Grand Rapids made his monthly visits and later all were confirmed at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
In 1914 they bought the farm home about 1 1/2 miles southeast of Alto (or one mile north of their son Elof's home). It is a large, lovely home that still stands, overlooking the many acres that once were a part of the original farm. C.S.
